Lewis Carroll's Elegy

I thought I saw a future where

  I practiced as a priest,

I looked again and found myself

  Not suited in the least:

I couldn’t preach and thought myself

  A base and sinful beast.

I thought I saw a way to charm

  The company at tea,

I looked again and found that I

  St-stammered terribly

W-w-when r-r-reading out

  P-p-p-poetry.

I thought I saw a girl with whom

  I might associate,

I looked again and found she’d come

To womanly estate:

Alas that children grow at such

An expeditious rate.
